イギリスのオペラグラス

　このオペラグラスは、見たところ新しいスタイルのように思えますが、戦前の製品である事は間違いありません。それもイギリス製とあるのでちょっと珍しいかな、と思い取り上げてみました。製品には　Kersaw wide angle 　British Patent No,363227 とあります。左羽根の上面には　MADE IN　右羽根上に　ENGLAND　と刻印されています。但し、何故か、倍率とか対物レンズ径などの表示はありません。従って、何倍の製品なのかこれだけでは不明です。
　このオペラグラスの特徴はちょっと説明しにくいのですが、羽根の複雑な構造にあります。使い勝手の問題からではなく、製作上の都合からの設計でそうなったのだと考えられますが、なかなかよく出来た設計です。対物レンズが楕円形になっている点、見え味が抜群な点、などを加えると当時でも相当に高価だったと推測出来ます。なお、コートは戦前ですから施されていません。
　オペラグラスとは文字通り観劇などに使用される製品で、本来派手なスタイルの機種が多いのですが、この製品はむしろ野外用として製作されたらしく本来の双眼鏡に似せて地味なデザインに仕上がっています。

　後日、このオペラグラスの詳細についてイギリスの得意先に問いただしてみたところ、下記のような返事が届きました。

　Kershaw
This company was one of the top four British specialist binocular makers for military use up until the late 1950's when competition from the Japanese binocular industry forced the company to cease production. I am not sure exactly what happened to the company in the 1960's.

Duaring the 1950's the company also prodused some binoculars and Opera glasses for cunsumer markets and we assume the model mentioned in your fax is from this period.

To the best of my knowledge Barr and Stroud is the only former British binocular manufactuer still in extence but they ceased binocular production in the mid 1960's to concentrate of specialist optical equpment for the military.

　この製品は戦前ではなく戦後間もなく1950年代に作られたようです。
